(Senkottai Dog)

Hi Deepak
It's the first writing I found in the net about Senkottai Dog. I remember I saw one ad in a malayalam daily four years back to sell Shenkottai Dog puppies. As of my information it's a fat dog compared to Rajapalayam. No more info available anywhere.
Thanks for your greate blog.
Jay

deepak,

i could not read the original post which i presume is in malayalam; my mac doesn't have the font installed. going by the comments in english that i could read, i'm really happy to know that there still are people who are interested in indian breeds, especially the chenkottai or senkottai.

i've been a passionate lover of indian dog breeds and have been trying to gather as much information as possible about them for the last 25 years.

as far as i know, the chenkottai breed is officially classified as "extinct" by the kennel club of india (KCI). what i've learned about the history of the breed is that it was originally developed for the maharaja of mysore for hunting tigers! this makes me wonder if it shares a common ancestry with the rhodesian ridgeback which was used to hunt lions in africa....

i'm fortunate in that my father had a chenkottai dog (he was called sam) when i was a toddler. indeed, sam is the first dog that i remember! he was a magnificent beast; you can imagine what he looked like to a 4 year old child! he was a complete one-msater-dog, he would only obey my father. i do remember, however, that he was very loving towards me and my younger cousin who must have been 2-3 years old.

unfortunately, he had to be euthanised after he became aggressive and uncontrollable after we got a labrador puppy from a family friend. i remember he mauled one of our servants who used to tease him a lot, almost killed him! in fact if my father hadn't come home for lunch when this happened, he probably would have ended up killing the unfortunate man. my father managed to pull him off our servant, but for the first time he wouldn't listen to my father and had to be physically pulled off that poor man....

i remember there were a few old black-and white pictures of him in one of our old albums, i'll see if it is still there and send it to you if i find it...

apart from sam, i've had the good fortune to have owned rajapalayams and another breed called "kanni" apart from alsatians, labradors, cocker spaniels, dachshunds etc etc.... and of all the breeds that i have kept, i must say that my absolute favorite is the rajapalayam.

apart from the breeds that i have kept, i have also had the good fortune to have been able to see and interact with other breeds such as the mudhol hound, the caravan hound, the rampur hound and the tibetan mastiff.

all the best, keep up the good work. thanks for creating and maintaining a blog dedicated to indian dog breeds!

regards,

mathew.
